Calvey supporters defend him against personal attacks from Lankford

Kevin Calvey - Friday, August 20, 2010

OKLAHOMA CITY (August 20, 2010) — Just one day after James Lankford took to the radio airwaves to personally attack Iraq War veteran Kevin Calvey, Calvey supporters are rushing to his defense at a press conference scheduled for 11:00 a.m. this morning in the state Capitol press room.

“James Lankford should be ashamed of himself for attacking the character of a decorated veteran like Kevin Calvey and for impugning Kevin's service to our country,” said Lieutenant General (Retired USAF) Tom Stafford, a former astronaut and Deputy Chief of Staff for the Air Force. "Kevin Calvey is no career politician – he left politics in 2006, when he could have continued as a lobbyist or in a government job, and instead volunteered to serve our country in Iraq," said General Stafford.  “James Lankford has never served our country, but Kevin Calvey risked his life for our country in Iraq. He served in a hostile fire zone, and brought justice to over 100 terrorists. Now THAT is character.”

A local Baptist pastor also weighed in on Lankford’s negative attacks, and will be on hand to make comments at the press conference.

“James Lankford claims to have character, but his negative personal attacks clearly show that he does not,” said Baptist Pastor Tom Vineyard, of Windsor Hills Baptist Church. “Accusing Kevin Calvey of lying is itself a lie. Kevin has not said one thing during this campaign that is not true. Mr. Lankford may not like it when Kevin points out important differences in their positions on issues, but those differences are real, not invented. Those differences matter, and voters should know about them.”

"Several times I have discussed with James Lankford his remarks attacking Kevin Calvey for Calvey's courageous stand against the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR)," said Vineyard.  "Lankford falsely accused Calvey of "political posturing" on CAIR, and it is outrageous for Lankford to attack Calvey that way, especially when Calvey personally prosecuted terrorists in Iraq.  It is clear that James Lankford does not adequately understand the threat of Islamic extremism, and that Kevin Calvey does."

Calvey said he will have more to say on this subject in the upcoming press conference, scheduled for today at 11:00 a.m. in the state Capitol press room, located on the fourth floor of the building.

Kevin Calvey is a small business owner and a conservative former state representative from Del City. Kevin volunteered to deploy to Iraq as a captain in the Army National Guard in 2007.  His mission in Iraq was to prosecute al Qaeda leaders and other terrorists in the Iraqi court system.  Kevin was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service.  Kevin recently filed a federal lawsuit against President Obama to challenge the constitutionality of the new health-care law. More than 1000 Oklahomans have joined Kevin as plaintiffs.  Kevin and his wife, Toni, live in Oklahoma City with their daughter, Anastasia and their newborn son, Thomas.

Local Baptist minister criticizes Lankford for “disingenuous” attacks on Calvey

Kevin Calvey - Thursday, August 19, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (August 19, 2010) — Local Baptist minister Tom Vineyard is criticizing James Lankford for his attacks on Kevin Calvey’s stance against the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

“James Lankford’s baseless attacks on Kevin Calvey are disingenuous and highlight why he is not ready to represent the Fifth Congressional District,” Vineyard said.  “Kevin Calvey has taken a principled stance against a group that is tied to terrorists.  For that, Kevin Calvey should be commended, not accused of ‘political posturing’ as Mr. Lankford said.

“I’ve spoken with Mr. Lankford about this issue, and I am not satisfied that he fully understands the threat we face from Islamic extremist groups like CAIR He says he would meet with representatives of that group, even though they are tied to terrorists and support building a mosque at Ground Zero. That simply shows a lack of understanding that will not serve Oklahomans well in Congress.

“Instead of demeaning Kevin Calvey, James Lankford should take a closer look at CAIR and educate himself on this group’s positions and ties to terrorists. Some of their members are in jail for their ties to terrorist organizations. CAIR itself was named as co-conspirator in a case involving fundraising for a terrorist group. These are serious issues that James Lankford should know about. Anyone seeking to represent our community in Congress should understand the relationship CAIR has with terrorist groups before they decide to grant them a meeting.”

Kevin Calvey continues to oppose the group, and repeated his position that he opposes building the mosque at Ground Zero, and will not meet with CAIR representatives.

“This is a dangerous group,” said Calvey. “Their ties to terrorist organizations represent a threat to America, and their support of building a mosque at Ground Zero is simply unconscionable. I will not grant these people a meeting. Instead, I will oppose their efforts at every turn. That’s not political posturing, as my opponent has said; that is principle. I’m very concerned about my opponent’s position on this issue, and I think voters should consider this important difference before they vote on August 24.”

Dr. Johnny Roy endorses Kevin Calvey for Congress

Kevin Calvey - Wednesday, August 18, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (August 18, 2010) — Former congressional candidate Dr. Johnny Roy has decided to endorse Kevin Calvey in the Fifth Congressional District runoff on August 24.

Dr. Roy has known Mr. Calvey and his family for a number of years. Besides his sense of loyalty to that friendship, Dr. Roy feels Mr. Calvey is a capable and skillful individual, whose legislative experience should serve him well in Congress.

“I am honored to have Dr. Roy’s support,” Calvey said.  “Dr. Roy ran a positive, principled campaign and has been a community leader in our area for years.  I look forward to working with Dr. Roy as our campaign reaches out to conservatives across the district.

“The runoff is just a few short days away, and I feel confident about the type of positive campaign we are running.  I am going to continue running on my record as a proven conservative, and I’m honored to have Dr. Johnny Roy’s friendship and support.”

Veterans and 911 Survivors Blast Lankford for Attacking Calvey

Kevin Calvey - Tuesday, August 17, 2010

OKLAHOMA CITY (August 17, 2010) — Leaders of Vets for Freedom, Iraq Veterans for Congress and 911 Families for a Safe and Strong America are saying that Kevin Calvey is the only candidate in the Fifth District runoff who will stand up to Islamic extremists and terrorists.

Early on in the Congressional race for Oklahoma’s Fifth District, James Lankford attacked Calvey, accusing him of “political posturing” because of Calvey’s refusal to meet the radical hate group known as C.A.I.R. (The Council on American Islamic Relations).

“Accusing Kevin Calvey of political posturing when Calvey is taking a courageous stance against an extremist hate group shows a lack of understanding on the part of James Lankford,” said Kieran Lalor, founder of Iraq Veterans for Congress. “C.A.I.R. is labeled as a hate group, and they have known ties to terrorist organizations. The F.B.I. has cut ties with the group. And yet Mr. Lankford calls it ‘political posturing’ when Mr. Calvey says he won’t meet with these Muslim extremists.”

Flagg Youngblood, Vets for Freedom PAC Director, also criticized Lankford’s understanding of defense issues.  "As a leader in one of our country's veterans groups, I am shocked that James Lankford attacked Kevin Calvey for Calvey's principled stand against C.A.I.R.  Our veterans deserve better than to have opportunistic politicians like James Lankford trying to score cheap political points at the expense of those who have served our country," said Youngblood.

Tim Sumner, co-founder of 911 Families for a Safe and Strong America, added, "James Lankford should be ashamed of himself for attacking Iraq War veteran Kevin Calvey because of Calvey's courageous stand against the Council on American Islamic relations.  Lankford is very naive about terrorism.  Calvey is very clear about the threat of terrorism.  As co-founder of the nation's largest group of 911 survivors, I urge all Oklahoma voters to choose Kevin Calvey August 24."

“I am very honored to have the support of the patriots running Vets for Freedom, Iraq Veterans for Congress, and 911 Families for a Safe and Strong America,” Calvey said.  “I have seen the threat that extremist Islam poses firsthand.  I have put terrorists behind bars.  I know what it takes to keep American safe and I will do just that in Congress.

"I understand the threat facing us and I ask for the vote of every citizen who wants a strong response to terrorism that won't mince words and won't fall prey to political correctness.”

Calvey amends ObamaCare suit to include over 1,000 plaintiffs

Kevin Calvey - Tuesday, August 10, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (August 10, 2010) — Congressional candidate Kevin Calvey has amended his lawsuit to overturn ObamaCare to include over 1,000 Oklahomans as plaintiffs.  Calvey’s lawsuit represents the only effort in Oklahoma to overturn ObamaCare on constitutional grounds.

“It is incredibly encouraging that over 1,000 fellow Oklahomans have joined our lawsuit to overturn ObamaCare,” Calvey said.  “Also encouraging is that over 2,000 Oklahomans requested to join the suit, although not all the requests were completed in time to be included in this amended complaint.

“ObamaCare represents the greatest threat to individual freedom that our nation has ever seen.  People are fed up with the federal government endlessly expanding its power and they are willing to fight this unconstitutional law by joining our suit.”

Calvey originally filed suit in federal court in April.  Calvey paid the filing fee himself and is donating his time and legal expertise to the effort.  The suit claims that ObamaCare violates the 10th Amendment to the Constitution by violating states’ and citizens’ rights through its mandated universal insurance coverage.

Calvey said he felt compelled to take action because Oklahoma’s Attorney General would not join other Attorneys General in suing to overturn ObamaCare’s universal mandate.  So far, 20 states have taken legal action to overturn ObamaCare and 29 states have introduced or passed measures to amend their constitutions to nullify portions of the health-care reform law.

“The tide is turning against federal overreach,” Calvey said.  “I will continue to fight against ObamaCare in every way I can.  Whether through this lawsuit or through overturning ObamaCare in Congress, I will do everything in my power to overturn this blatantly unconstitutional law.”

Calvey condemns activist judge, calls on Supreme Court to reaffirm sanctity of marriage

Kevin Calvey - Friday, August 06, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (August 6, 2010) — Congressional candidate Kevin Calvey is condemning a federal judge for overturning Proposition 8, a California ballot initiative that defined marriage as between one man and one woman.

“The voters of California have a right to uphold traditional marriage in their own state, just like we have done here in Oklahoma,” Calvey said.  “In this case, one activist judge has invalidated the votes of millions of Californians, forcing his own views on the state.  This is legislating from the bench at its worst.”

Judge Vaughn Walker, the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, ruled on Wednesday that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional because “Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license.  Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite-sex couples are superior to same-sex couples.”

“Judge Walker’s decision stretches the Constitution to the breaking point,” Calvey said.  “Nowhere does the U.S. Constitution grant homosexuals the right to marriage.  States have the right to govern themselves, just like we did here in Oklahoma when we protected marriage in our Constitution.

“I sincerely hope that the Supreme Court will take up this case and overturn this wrongheaded decision.  The voters of California made the common-sense decision that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.  I call on the Supreme Court to reaffirm traditional marriage and reject this judicial activism.”

Calvey back on the air with first TV ad of the runoff

Kevin Calvey - Thursday, August 05, 2010
Oklahoma City (August 5, 2010) – Congressional candidate Kevin Calvey is back on TV with campaign ads one week after qualifying for the runoff election in Congressional District 5.

“With this ad, we are reaching conservative voters to let them know that I have a record of fighting liberals and serving our country,” Calvey said.

The ad focuses on Calvey’s work in the state House, where he authored a record-breaking tax cut, his service in Iraq as a Captain in the Army National Guard, and his lawsuit to overturn ObamaCare.

The ad also mentions runoff opponent, James Lankford, in a complimentary way.  “Now that the campaign is narrowed down to just two candidates, it makes sense for voters to take a look at both side-by-side,” Calvey said.  “We are comparing the background and experiences of both candidates, and we’re doing so in a positive and respectful manner.”

“I want to go to Congress to take on the liberals who  are ruining our economy and restore common-sense, conservative government,” Calvey said.  “This ad explains my conservative values and why I’ll be an effective leader in Congress.”

CAIR executive director goes to trial for fraud, Calvey calls on CAIR to clean up its act

Kevin Calvey - Monday, August 02, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (August 2, 2010) — Recent Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Executive Director Michael Aziz Gipson has been charged with conspiracy, wire fraud, and money laundering in connection with fraudulent mortgages.

“Once again, an agent of CAIR has shown a stunning lack of moral character,” Calvey said.  “Michael Aziz Gipson was CAIR Oklahoma’s executive director until just a few weeks ago.  Clearly, he led the organization even while being investigated for fraud.  If CAIR truly wants to advance Muslims in America then they need to clean up their act.”

Michael Aziz Gipson and two accomplices, Derrick Reuben Smith and Trina Tahir, plead not guilty to the charges.  Gipson was elected as CAIR Oklahoma’s executive director in May 2009.  He recently resigned and was replaced with Razmi Hashmi.

“I encourage Mr. Hashmi to clean CAIR Oklahoma up,” Calvey said.  “The national CAIR organization has set a terrible example for their local chapters by embracing anti-Israeli extremists.  I hope that CAIR Oklahoma can set a better example by promoting morally upstanding staff.

“CAIR’s stated goal is to improve relations between Muslims and non-Muslims.  It’s time they start doing that instead of cleaning up after racist anti-Israeli extremists and criminals.”

Jim DeMint and Tom Coburn, Senate candidate Marco Rubio and other conservative leaders in signing the Contract from America, a grassroots initiative to uphold individual liberty, economic freedom, and limited government principles.

American Conservative Union PAC endorses Calvey for Congress

Kevin Calvey - Tuesday, July 20, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY (July 20, 2010) — With one week to go before the primary election for Congress, Republican Kevin Calvey has secured the endorsement of another major conservative group.

The American Conservative Union PAC, America’s oldest and largest grassroots conservative organization, announced today it is supporting Calvey for the Fifth District congressional seat.

“Kevin Calvey’s outstanding record as a conservative leader in the Oklahoma House of Representatives makes him the clear choice for conservatives in Oklahoma’s Fifth District,” said David A. Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union PAC.

“As the first Republican to represent his district since statehood, Kevin Calvey in 2005 authored the largest tax cut in state history, saving Oklahoma taxpayers an estimated $400 million per year. He also received recognition from the Oklahoma Rifle Association for his advocacy on Second Amendment issues and was a forceful spokesman for the rights of the unborn. I urge conservatives to support Kevin Calvey in the Republican primary and again in the November general election.”

Calvey said he was honored to have another grassroots conservative organization supporting his candidacy for Congress.

“I’m very thankful to the American Conservative Union for recognizing my conservative record, and choosing to support me for Congress,” Calvey said. “The ACU is a strong voice for conservatives across the country, and I’m proud to be among the candidates they are supporting this year.”

The American Conservative Union PAC is the latest grassroots conservative organization to support Calvey’s campaign. ACU joins the Club for Growth, Concerned Women for America, Gun Owners of America, and others in supporting Calvey.
